Chapter 5 of Mark’s gospel present three miracles of Jesus.
- Jesus heals a man possessed by Demons - The man was tormented and overtaken by the power of evil. The story shows us the destructive nature of evil and the power of God’s grace.
- Jesus restores life the synagogue official’s daughter - The young girl was dead. Jesus restored life to her.
- Jesus heals a woman with a 12-year hemorrhage - The woman had suffered physically, socially, and religiously for 12 years.
Miracles are real, historical events that communicate spiritual truth. What do these three miracles teach us about Jesus, ourselves, and the gospel?
The miracles of Jesus show us His power over all other powers.
Jesus has power over evil, disease, and death. These miracles display these powers and the willingness of Jesus to use them for His people.
“A powerful Jesus is of no comfort to us if He is not also gracious.”
The miracles of Jesus show us our desperate condition and need of change.
The dilemmas in these stories (evil, suffering, and death) are the fruit of sin. These accounts show us the effects of sin and our need to be freed from sin.
The miracles of Jesus show us that we are changed by grace through faith in Him.
These accounts point to the gospel and show that God can change us. God’s power to change us is not limited by evil, suffering, or death.
