The Heart of Discipleship
The Disciple:
A seven-week series about following Jesus Christ in the world. Discipleship involves a leader (Jesus), followers (Christians), and a way of living (all that Jesus commanded). Sunday sermons and Wednesday evening Community Group discussions are devoted to this topic.

What does it mean to be a disciple? A disciple loves Jesus from the heart rather than merely following man’s traditions. Jesus wants the gospel to penetrate deeper into the heart of the disciple and broader into the world.
In the heart of Mark we find the heart of discipleship. (Mark 8-10)
Through a series of interactions between Jesus and His disciples, Mark shows the reader the central aspect of following Jesus.
The heart of discipleship is a life of the cross. (Mark 8:34)
“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)
The heart of discipleship is bowing to the authority of Jesus.
“There is no sense in denying yourself if there is no Jesus.”
Jesus’ teaching on the heart of discipleship shapes our lives and our church in very practical ways.
- Jesus is not yet finished changing us. We have not yet arrived. The presence of correction by Jesus means that He is still at work in you.
- Jesus is not a means to materialistic increase in this world.
- We are called to repent for making demands of Jesus and other people.
- The place of communion with Jesus Christ is on the road to the cross.
- Partners us with Jesus mission in the world.
