The Disciple’s Command

The Disciple:

A seven-week series about following Jesus Christ in the world. Discipleship involves a leader (Jesus), followers (Christians), and a way of living (all that Jesus commanded). Sunday sermons and Wednesday evening Community Group discussions are devoted to this topic.

Jesus said the great commandment is first to love God and second to love others.
Jesus calls all disciples to love God alone. The Bible teaches that God must act in us to help us obey this command. See Deuteronomy 6:4, 10:12, and 30:6.

The great commandment is for Jesus’ disciples to obey.

  • The command is important. The disciple of Jesus will not take it lightly but will seek to obey it.
  • We obey the great command from a new heart. God commands us to obey, and then God grants us to ability to obey the command by changing us. See Ezekiel 36:26-27.
  • The command is to love. Jesus wants disciples to desire to obey Him. “If you just understand the command, you are not far from the Kingdom of God.” Ask God to change your desires.

Disciples can cultivate love for God and others.
Love for God

  • Meditate on God’s love for you in the cross and resurrection of Jesus.
  • Meditate on the greatness and completeness of God’s forgiveness of you.
  • Meditate on God’s generosity toward you.
  • Treasure God.

Love for Others

  • Remember God’s love for you.
  • See your solidarity with others.
  • Look at potential of others in Christ.
  • Invest in people.
